Microsoft Azure Sweden Central — Gävle Campus
Gävle hosts Microsoft's primary Azure data center campus in Sweden, designated as the 'Sweden Central' region (Azure region code: swedencentral). The campus opened in November 2021 and spans a significant portion of the 900-acre total footprint Microsoft occupies across its three Swedish sites.
Located at Bakvretsgatan in Gävle, the campus provides Azure cloud services, Microsoft 365, and AI workloads to customers across the Nordic region and Europe. As part of Microsoft's $3.2 billion (33.7 billion SEK) investment announced in 2024, the Gävle campus is being expanded to maximum capacity, with new construction ongoing through 2025 and beyond.
The facility employs approximately 230 Microsoft staff across all Swedish sites and is powered entirely by renewable energy through a partnership with Vattenfall.
$3.2 Billion Expansion: 20,000 GPUs for AI Workloads
In June 2024, Microsoft announced a $3.2 billion investment to expand its Swedish data center capacity to maximum levels. The Gävle campus is central to this expansion, with new construction adding significant capacity.
Microsoft is deploying more than 20,000 of its most advanced GPUs across the Gävle, Sandviken, and Staffanstorp campuses to support AI workloads for Azure customers. The expansion is expected to require approximately 5.3 million construction work hours and support thousands of jobs during peak construction.
Gävle is one of the most sustainably operated data center regions in the world, running on 100% carbon-free energy and holding zero-waste certification.
Long-Stay Accommodation in Gävle
Gävle offers a range of accommodation options for professionals on long-term assignments. The city has hotels, serviced apartments, and short-term rentals available.
However, availability can be limited during peak construction phases when hundreds of workers are on-site simultaneously. For teams working at the Microsoft Gävle campus, accommodation within the city or in nearby Sandviken is the most practical option.
Gävle is a mid-sized Swedish city with good infrastructure, supermarkets, restaurants, and public transport connections to Stockholm and Uppsala.
